UNDER A CLOUD CONDITION OF DON QUEX (By Telegraph.—rress Association) CHRISTCHURCH. Friday Don Quex, one of the New Zealand Cup favourites, was lame before and after working at Riccarton this morning. It will depend on the progress he makes today whether the Awapuni trainer. G. W. New, will bo able to run him tomorrow. It is an unfortunate late development as Don Quex was particularly well. If he does lake his place in the field he may still go close to victory. The trouble is seated in the fetlock of the off hind leg. Apparently he wrenched the joint In his box during the night. Don Quex trotted all right and hit out freely while working over three Turlongs on the trial grass but he was favouring the leg when he left the course. It is one of those things that might disappear quickly but in the interim his prospects do not look good. A. TOKI’S C’JP MOUNT CHANCES OF CAPRONELLA The young Matamata horseman, A. Toki, has the mount on Capronella in the New Zealand Cup tomorrow, and there is every prospect that he may emulate last year’s achievement when he rode the winner of two important handicaps, the King George Handicap at Ellerslie and the Waikato Cup at Te Rapa. On Saturday last Toki won the Waikato Cup on Water Vixen and there will'be a solid section or the public tomorrow confident of his ability to win the New Zealand Cup on Capronella. Capronella, who is trained by H. Greene, in Hawke’s Bay, is a five-year-old mare by Kincardine, the sire of this year’s Cup favourite, Glenfalloch, and, of course, the champion, Kindergarten. Her dam, Vanestep. ran second to that great mare Cuddle in the New Zealand Cup, and her granddam was the ramous Martian mare, Warstep, who dead-heated with Indigo in the same race. Capronella won at her last start early this month, the Park Stakes, one mile and a-quarter, at Greenmeadows, when she was ridden by Toki. She had the run of the race and won easily, beating Gayest Son, Yogi, Lambourn. Alchemy —all horses that have been racing prominently or late. DEATH OF BROOD MARE Billikins, the dam of Hunting Mac and Flowerburn. met her end at Waharoa last week. While frisking about in a paddock she fractured her leg in two places, necessitating her destruction. BOLD GALLOPER TYPHOON AS HANDICAPPER Typhoon lias gone a long way since he railed in maiden company at Masterton, for, arter winning the October Handicap, one mile, on the opening day at the Wellington spring fixture last month, he beat all except Longsword on the second daw That success carried him out of the hack ranks, and his next start came in the Levin Handicap at Otaki on Saturday. A big strider, he was taken to the front early, there being little pace on, and he was thus kept clear of trouble. It was a big question to ask or him. but the Deroe gelding got through his work like a real tradesman, and a bright ruture appears to lie ahead of him. Typhoon Is a product or Deroe rrom the Royal Stag mare Doe, who was a sister to that honest performer Royal Game, both being rrom Arihia, by Cyrus—Aema, by Stepniak—Couronne, by Gipsy Grand. Saturday’s winner was bred by Pilot Oificer N. E. Preston, who was piloting Typhoons when he was posted missing, but the Defoe gelding now carries the colours of Mr A. E. Preston, Jnr., and the turn of good fortune was overdue.
