Borough Employees “That the question of staff salaries be left until the end of the financial year, and in the meantime the committee appointed earlier be requested to go into the matter generally and report to the council,” was a recommendation from the finance committee adopted by the Hamilton Borough Council last night. Baths Caretaker When the works committee reported to the Plamilton Borough Council last night that no appointment of a caretaker of the municipal baths had been made, and that a temporary arrangement had- been reached, Mr A. L. Fow suggested that a woman might be appointed, as was the case at Tauranga. The committee was authorised to make a suitable appointment as soon as possible. Liquor Laws Commission “Does the Prime Minister remember promising to set up a Royal Commission to investigate the licensing laws?” asked Mr R. G. Gerard (Opposition—Mid - Canterbury) in notice of a question in the House of Representatives yesterday. “If he does, will he state when he proposes to have his undertaking implemented?” Theft From Army The theft of an engineer’s hammer, the property of the Army Department, on October 19, was denied by Ronald Mason Sharrock, of Hamilton, when he appeared before Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Hamilton, today. The prosecution was conducted by DetectiveSergeant W. R. Murray. After hearing evidence by personnel of the Army M.T. workshops the magistrate convicted Sharrock and fined him £2. Value of Health Stamps Interesting evidence ’of the increase in the value of health postage stamps is provided by a study of the price-lists of stamp dealers. The two 1931 health stamps, with face values of 2d and 3d respectively, are offered for sale today by New Zealand stamp dealers at 17s 6d each, and by English dealers at 25s each, used or unused. One Australian dealer’s price for these stamps is £3. Later health stamps are offered at prices up to 12s 6d each. Amateur Players Help Seamen The Dunedin Repertory Society has decided to contribute the proceeds of its recent production of “Flare Path” to organisations interested in the welfare of merchant seamen. The total proceeds from the production amounted to £227 13s 7d. The Christchurch Repertory Society will commence a season with “Flare Path” this week. Among the coming amateur productions in "Wellington will be “They Came to a City” (which the Hamilton People’s Theatre produced successfully a few weeks ago) by the Unity Theatre, and “A Cuckoo in the Nest” by the Repertory Society. The Waipawa Dramatic Club has had quite a tour in Hawke’s Bay with “Ladies in Retirement.”
