SPREADING INDUSTRY

ACTION BY GOVERNMENT DECENTRALISATION INQUIRY (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Monday The Government’s decision to set up a decentralisation sub-committee of the Industrial Development Committee which began its work recently, was announced today by the Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer, Acting-Minister of Industries and Commerce. The subcommittee is to consist of five members representing various interests. “The government has always favoured a policy of decentralisation of industry wherever this is reasonably possible,” said the Minister. “It is generally accepted that this Dominion should avoid the creation of unduly large industrial centres, with the concomitant evils which have been only too patent in larger industrial countries overseas. However, there are numerous problems associated with the setting up of certain industries in smaller centres, and it is to examine these problems and consider detailed proposals for effective decentralisation that the Government has decided to appoint the sub-committee within the organisation for national development.”

Discussing the personnel of the proposed sub-committee the Minister said that for the present" it would consist of Mr Clyde Carr, M.P., as chairman, and representatives of the Department of Industries and Commerce, the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation, the Federation of Labour and the Municipal Association of New Zealand. The last three organisations, he added, had already been asked to nominate their representatives, and it was expected that all recommendations would be received and the committee functioning some time next month.
