PATRIOTIC FUND APPEAL
HAMILTON BUSINESS AREA ARRANGEMENTS FOR CANVASS
A meeting of representatives of the business area of Hamilton was called by the Mayor, Mr H. D. Caro, in the Council Chambers this morning and attended by 18, including two women. Disappointment at the smallness of the attendance was voiced by the Mayor, who commented that it was evident that the citizens of Hamilton were not very enthusiastic about the collection of patriotic funds. He pointed out that Hamilton’s allocation was £20,000, of which amount half had to be found in the business area.
The money was required before December 20 and with a view to achieving the business area’s quota he suggested that the district be divided into groups and collectors appointed to canvass them on the lines of direct giving. They were handicapped, he said, by the fact that there were in the business area 139 houses with headquarters outside Hamilton and they had no check whether or not they had contributed. Urgency Of Appeal
The Mayor emphasised that the matter was urgent in that the money was required to provide the fighting services overseas with amenities they were entitled to, and it was up lo everyone to give to the full extent of their resources. The public did not realise what the Patriotic Fund Board was doing, said Mr Caro. All the various organisations such as the Y.M.C.A., Catholic Fund Board, Salvation Army, the Red Cross and St. John etc. were all financed by patriotic funds and the various organisations were only the expending agencies.
Mr Caro mentioned that a big art union, run by the labour unions of the Dominion, was to be launched in aid of the patriotic funds and all moneys collected in the various towns would be credited to the zone in which the tickets were sold. Hamilton had ordered a large number of books and it was anticipated that they would arrive this week. Division of Area
Hamilton’s quota in this patriotic appeal is £20,000, and the areas have been divided as follows:—Business area, from Bridge Street, to London Street, from the river to the line of Anglesea Street, excluding residences, £10,000; Frankton-Maeroa, £850; Hamilton West, south of the railway .line, excluding the business area, £500; Hamilton East and south of Gibbons Creek, £850; Whitiora, north of the railway line, excluding the business area, £750, Claudelands, north of Gibbons Creek, £BSO.
This morning the following collectors were appointed for the business area, Messrs E. G. Scrimshaw, W. B. Pomeroy, J. J. Branton, G. Bindon, H. M. Hammond, G. Boyes, E. C. Day, A. T. Smith, R. Braithwaite, F. Jones, E. R. Marsh, A. L. Fow, Mesdames H. C. Ross, P. Huntington and Miss E. G. Wilkins. Members of the Chamber of Commerce are to assist also.
