MOTORIST FINED £2O
DROVE WHILE INTOXICATED A fine of £2O was imposed by Mr W. H. Freeman, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Hamilton, today on George William Clayton, aged 36, insurance canvasser, Claudelands (Mr J. F. Strang), who pleaded guilty of being intoxicated in charge of a motor-car in River Road, Hamilton, on Saturday night. Senior-Sergeant A. G. McHugh, prosecuting, said defendant was driving into town and struck the kerbing, the car being overturned near a constable’s residence. At the police station a doctor certified defendant to be intoxicated. Counsel said defendant had taken a glass of rum and lemonade just before leaving home to relieve his asthma. Mr Strang asked that the driving license be not cancelled, as it would prevent defendant plying his calling. The magistrate imposed a fine of £2O and decided not to cancel the driving license. He remarked that in the cities magistrates often imposed a gaol sentence for the same class of offence.
