Teachers Appointed The following teaching appointments were authorised by the Auckland Education Board. Sole teacher: Mr T. W. Bate, Waitetuna. War appointments authorised:—Secondary assistant mistress: Mrs D. Philpot, 8.A., Matamata District High, Assistant master: Mr R. Graney, Morrinsville District High. Manpower Direction Order The district manpower officer, Mr C. A. Beaufort, asked leave to withdraw an information in the Magistrate’s Court, Hamilton, today when a case was called in which Albert William Kelm was charged with failure to obey a direction order to work at Renown collieries as a trucker. The case had been adjourned at Ngaruawahia on September 11 to give defendant an opportunity of reporting for work, which he had done. Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., granted permission to withdraw the information.

Special Council Meeting The Hamilton Borough Council held a special meeting last night to consider housing, railway improvements, sewerage and water extensions. Proceedings were taken in committee, and reports will be tabled at the next ordinary meeting of the council. The Mayor, Mi* H. D. Caro, piesided, and councillors present were Messrs W. W. Dillicar, A. J. Denz, Arthur Fow, W. R. Shattock, R. Braithwaite, D. C. Street, J. Treloar, T. Parker and E. G. Scrimshaw. Leave of absence was granted to Mrs H. C. Ross and Messrs T. H. Melrose and E. J. Watkins.

Exhibition of Photographic Prints The photographic prints in the inter-club competition in New Zealand for the Bledisloe Cup are now cn exhibition in Hamilton, at the Toorak Hall. They are of a very high standard. The competition resulted:—Auckland 1, Christchurch 2, Wellington 3, Hamilton 4, Dunedin 5, Southland 6. For champion print Mr Gordon, of Auckland, was first, and Mr H. Larsen, of Hamilton, tied for second place. The Waikato Photographic Society, despite difficulties caused by the war, is having a very successful season, and the membership has grown to 45. Operatic Society’s Great Success “Never in the history of the Wellington Amateur Operatic Society has such a success been attained,” writes Mr Bert Hickford, a former member of the Hamilton Operatic Society, regarding the recent production of “A Country Girl” in Wellington. “The Opera House holds 1670 people and it was packed at each of the sixteen performances, including three matinees. At the close ft was announced that the season had been such a success that the society was able to invest £SOO in the Victory Loan and presented £IOO to the patriotic funds.” Mr Hickford, who took the juvenile lead in the production, had to learn his part in a fortnight. Mr P. W. Maddock, formerly of Hamilton, was house manager.
