RACES AND WAR LOAN
LITTLE MONEY SUBSCRIBED HUGE TOTALISATOR TURNOVER (Received April 12, 3.15 p.m.) MELBOURNE, April 12 The huge crowds which thronged the Ranawick and Flemington racecourses at Easter, creating betting records, subscribed less than £IOOO at the-special Victory Loan offices on the courses. In revealing this the deputy-Prime Minister. Mr Forde, said: “This is not tha time for sections of the Australian public to go sports mad. It is a time when they should remember that bombs come before bets.” At the Flemington racecourse yesterday only £4BO in cash was received at the war loan oflioe, although there was a record crowd of tens of thousands. Even this paltry amount was greater than the sum subscribed to the war loan at Randwick, where the totalisator turnover for the two days’ racing was over £321.000.
