COMMENT ON THE RUNNING The opening event at Trentham today, the Higliweight Handicap, saw 22 starters, and ilie- llnisii was between Awapunif rained horses. Hinge raft was first away, but soon lost the ]pad to Glaciate, with Kingcraft. Te Awe Awe and Beneve in good positions. There was little charitre among the leaders until the top of tne >t; aiglil. where Ringcraft and Glaciate dropped mu and a grand finish saw Vivid Niphi beat Tan Uru by the narrowest or margins, arid Beneve and To Awe Awe right up. The time. 2.21], was an indi cation of the condition of the course. A decisive win was recorded^ by the Wanganui-owned and Awapuni-trnined filly Subdued in the Wellington Stakes. She slipped smartly out.of the harrier, opened up a gap of three lengths from Colais, with Nawab in third position, and went on to win by five lengths from Nawab. who got up right on the post to beat Colais by a neck. Subdued has been unbeaten in four starts and is a particularly smart Ally. Her time today nearly equalled the race record of 58], established by Diatomouss in 193 4. Sal's Tal was first to show out in the Apprentices’ riate from Elianthus and Vera Lynn, with Arustra and Fortune’s Smile close up. Vera Lynn soon ran to the front j and led Into the. straight from Elianthus ! and Arustra, but in the last furlong Tide- j less and Wee Bun put in their claims, and i in a good finish Tideless did best to win by a head Trom Vera Lynn, with Wee Bun nearly two lengths away third, and High Ideal and Arustrus nearest or the others. Time, J. 27. Tisoy was first out in the Fitzherbert Handicap, but soon lost, his place, and Sorrell led Master Terl. Sir Boswell and Plassida in the early stages, with Penascoln and Master Baron handy. Sorr.dl held on until the last few strides, when Plassida asserted herself to win bv a narrow ;nargin. Thciolyn was right up third, and Breezealong and Gay Chat were After some delay at the post, the field went off in a line, except that Amigo was badly left. Royal Merit soon took up the running from The Raker. Foxola, Full Hand and Kindergarten, wide out, and Lord Chancellor at the head or the others. Royal Merit had Foxola and Full Hand as his nearest attendant with 10 furlongs «o go. and soon The Baker and Rink \- re nearest to them, followed' by Nighoan, Don Quex and Kindergarten. With seven furlongs to go Royal Merit led Trom Full /land. Foxola, Don Quex, The Raker, Glent'alloch, Alcthea, Kindergarten. Macedoine and Happy Ending, with Lord Chancellor next. Royal Merit was still in front with lour furlongs to go. He led Rink and Foxola at tiiis stage, and the next five were Don Quex, Alcthea. GlenTalloeh. Lord Chancellor and Kindergarten. There was little change until well in the straight, where Don Quex and Kindergarten challenged the I'aders. The lopweight could make little Impression on them, but Don Quex finished wry resolutely, and went on to win by four lengths from Macedoine, who also did well in the closing stages, to heat Rink tic nearly live lengths for second monev. Lou Rosa was a fair fourth and then came Ah I lion. Rattledress, Kindergarten. Foxola. Full Hand. Lord Chancellor and Merry May The winner was given a good reception as he returned to the birdcage.
