Without the self-sacrificing service of the i nation’s womenfolk, China’s valiant I resistance to aggression would have • been impossible. i In recent lectures Mr H. J. Timperley, formerly adviser to the Chinese Government, now in Australia as adviser to the Chinese Ministry of Information, has paid many tributes to Chinese women. In war and in reconstruction, he says, they have stood shoulder tc shoulder with their menfolk. They look after the wounded and care for the refugee children. They have done useful work at the front as liaiasor between Army and people. Behind the lines they have been working ir war industry. And when new roads have to be built they handle picks and shovels alongside their men. In all political reforms being carried out by the Chungking Government the services of Chinese women have been enlisted. There are IS women among the 240 members oi the People’s Political Council and one was elected to the Presidium of five Of these 15, eight are engaged or educational activities, one on economic research, one on law, one or social welfare work and four or politics. Women also share political anc administrative responsibilities ir rural towns and villages. As far back as 1939 there were 941 egistered women doctors, and these have played, an important part ir. Lied Cross and medical work. Women * doctors, nurses and pharmacists work in field and base hospitals maintained by the Army Medica: Service. Others serve with the Red ; Cross mobile units at the front anc jin the anti-epidemic corps which j operates in war zones.
