HEAD OF LEGATION

AMERICAN OFFICIAL ARRIVES SENIOR CONSUL IN DOMINION Mr Prescott Childs, the recentlyappointed Consul and First Secretary to the United States Legation in Wellington, has arrived in the Dominion. He will replace the present ConsulGeneral for New Zealand, Mr Raymond E. Cox, who is to return to Washington for a new appointment. Mr Childs will not be the ConsulGeneral but he will be the senior consul in New Zealand and in charge of the legation. He left Auckland for Wellington last night. The foreign service of Mr Childs includes two years in the American service in Berlin from 1934 to 1936. His most recent post was consul at Rio de Janeiro. He served with the United States Army overseas in 1918-19. A keen archaeologist, he accompanied an archaeological expedition to the Near East some years ago. Mr Childs will be joined later by his wife and two sons.
