PROBLEMS OF PACIFIC NEED OF CO=OPERATION (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) SYDNEY, Jan. 13 “Australia ar.d New Zealand are the democratic nations of the British Empire, in the South-west Pacific and must work together as closely as possible, not only for the Empire, but for democracy as a whole,” said the Prime Minister of New Zealand, the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, on his arrival at Sydney from Auckland today to attend the conference at Canberra with the Australian Government. He was accompanied by the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, the Minister of Labour, the Hon. P. C. Webb, and departmental advisers. The delegation was met at the airport by the Minister of External Affairs, Dr. H. V. Evatt, the Minister of Supply and Shipping, Mr J. A Beasley, the High Commissioner for New Zealand in Australia, Mr C. A. Berendsen, and the High Commissioner for Australia in New Zealand, Mr T. G. de L. D’AJton. Mr Fraser said the conference | would be the most important of the many which hod been held between ! the two countries. He believed there would be excellent results. The problems of all the United Nations in the Pacific could be solved in a way that would strengthen democracy. Control of Pacific Islands Mr Fraser added that the New Zealand Government had an open mind on the ultimate control of the Pacific islands and of their strategic value and he was anxious to know the views of the Australian Government. New Zealand, after providing for the returned soldiers, would consider encouraging immigration. Mr Fraser said. The need of a greater population in the Dominion was realised. In the councils of the world New Zealand would maintain tho stand she adopted as a member of the league of Nations, to prevent aggression, and would try to ’.ring about a new world organisation, either through the League of Nations or some alternative body, to make war impossible.
