NAVAL ENGAGEMENT

ENEMY TAKEN BY SURPRISE LONDON, Sept. 28 British light coastal forces had another encounter early yesterday with German forces off the French coast. The British ships got within close range before they were seen by the enemy—three heavily-armed patrol ships. The Admiralty says they were attacked with torpedoes and gunfire. The enemy was taken completely by surprise and the return fire was ineffective. One German ship was blcwn up, a second severely damaged and the third was left burning fiercely. All the British ships got back safely with one casualty on board—an officer with slight wounds.

Lieutenant-Commander Peter Scott, son of Captain Scott, the famous Antarctic explorer, was in command of the British forces.
