TONIGHT’S PROGRAMMES

ROXY THEATRE Two pleasantly-contrasted films will be screened tonight. “The Mayor of 44th Street” is an entertaining musical romance set among the lights of Broadway. Several tuneful melodies are included. George Murphy and Anne Shirley have the romantic leads, and William Cargan and Richard Barthelmess are prominent in the cast. “The Mystery of Marie Roget” is the film version of Edgar Allan Poe's very dramatic story, with Maria Montez and Patric Knowles heading the STATE THEATRE “Diamond Frontiers” ,is a thrilling drama, dealing with the activities of diamond smugglers. It is a story of injustice and revenge, holding the clQse interest of the audience throughout. A strong cast includes Victor McLaglen, Ann Nagel, Philip Dorn and John Loder. “Laddie,” a charming romance, is the film version of Gene Stratton’s widely-read story, and has brought the well-loved characters to the screen very successfully. Tim Holt and Virginia Gilmore have the principal roies. REGENT THEATRE Ginger Rogers and Ray Milland do good work in the romantic comedy, “The Major and the Minor.” Ginger masquerades as a girl of twelve and is involved in some exciting and funny adventures. Ray Milland is the Major of the title, and of course wins Ginger in the end. although engaged to another girl at the beginning. THEATRE ROYAL "Hei Tiki,” a thrilling film of Maori life, will be screened today and on the stage a party of Maori entertainers will give songs, hakas and poi dances. The theme of "Hei Tiki” is simply this: The chief of a certain tribe had to preserve his first-born female child so that she would be a bride for the mythical war god, Maru, when the latter chose to make his appearance. This is discovered by a hostile tribe with exciting results. CIVIC THEATRE Scenes of girl workers at Ruakura farm and an intensely interesting Soviet film, showing the relief of Stalingrad and the capture of German Generals, are features of the current programme. The story of General Mikhailovich, the leader of the Chetniks, is told in "Chetniks.” Philip Dorn scores a big success in the role of the General. There are some very exciting incidents. R.S.A. REVUE Great interest is being taken in the Royal tomorrow night. The programme, R.S.A. Revue to be staged in the Theatre which has been arranged by the Hamilton Orphans’ Club, contains many entertaining items, including selections by the club’s orchestra. Returned servicemen will be the guests of the association. Seats should be reserved at once.
