LAND SALES ACT

FARMERS’ OPPOSITION AUCKLAND UNION’S ATTITUDE The question of the attitude to be adopted by the Auckland Provincial Farmers’ Union in relation to the Servicemen’s Settlement and Land Sales Act was discussed at the monthly meeting of the provincial executive. It was reported by members of the executive who were in Wellington rcently that the Dominion president, Mr W. W. Mulholland, had made a request that the Farmers' Union should take no part in implementing the Act. In reply to Mr V. Simms (Otorohanga) on the question of members of the union accepting positions on Rehabilitation Committees, the president, Mr H. M. Rushworth, said these committees were not at present operating the Act. Members of the union who were occupying positions on the committees should retain them for the time being and until their duties clashed with their obligations to fellow farmers.

After considerable discussion it was resolved on the motion of Messrs J. H. Furniss (Waikato) and A. J. Campbell (Waikino), “That this executive endorses the instruction from the Dominion executive, and subject to ratification by that executive, calls upon all members of the union in the Auckland Province to decline nomination to any Land Sales Committee or Court that may be established to implement the Act.” An amendment by Mr A. E. Bryant (Te Awamutu) was lost, “That this provincial executive declines to nominate any . member of the union to serve on any Land Sales Committee or Court established to implement the Act.”
