MANPOWER DIRECTION

TEACHERS AND STUDENTS The direction by the manpower authorities of over 3500 men and women, some from unessential industry and others even from essential works, to cary out work in freezing works, dairy factories, vegetable gardens, dehydration plants, canneries for about four months, commencing early next year, is expected to be announced shortly. It is believed that all school teachers, lecturers and students over 18 will be drafted in this manner. The instructions are understood to be of a most sweeping nature, and unless a man or woman can prove medical unfitness he or she will be compulsorily drafted for the work. In regard to the Auckland University College it is understod the authori-, ties will be asked to extend the summer vacation to meet the requirements. Children will be asked to volunteer for some of this work during the holidays but their parents consent will be necessary. Whereever possible schoolgirls will be employed where they can sleep at home. Otherwise they will probably be under the surveillance of a teacher and assurances will be given that they will not be located near military camps.
