LOCAL, AND GENERAL

After Eighteen Months Eighteen months after he became a prisoner of war in the Netherlands East Indies, Private K. V. Church has had his first letter delivered to his mother, Mrs V. Church, Rostrevor Street, Hamilton. Private Church enlisted from Australia. In the formal letter permitted he says he is well.

Election Meeting Incident A woman elector who would not allow her enthusiasm to attend a meeting addressed by Mr W. S. Goosman, M.P., at Raglan, to be lessened by weather or distance took the limelight soon after proceedings began. The elements were so severe that the prospective chairman was unable to attend from a distance. Apologies were being offered when the woman jumped to her feet and exclaimed, “I walked eight miles to get to this meeting.” Shortage of Beef

The release of a further 700 quarters of beef to relieve the fat stock shortage at Westfield is intended by the Government. In mentioning that advice to this effect had been received in Auckland, Mr H. C. Bridges, president of the Auckland Master Butchers’ Association, said that in spite of the high prices being paid butchers were unable to obtain sufficient quantities of beef to meet current demands. A supply recently made available by the Marketing Department to relieve the shortage had been exhausted.
