ORPHANS’ CLUB

An address on the English language, its use and misuse, g.ven by the vice-president, Mr M. B. Peat, music by the club’s orchestra under the baton of the president, Mr W. A. King, were highlights at the Hamilton Orphans’ Club social evening on Saturday. A member, Mr F. Young, who recently returned from service overseas on leave, was accorded a warm welcome, as also were the numerous visitors, for whom the Cambridge Club president, Mr G. E. Haydon, responded. Items included contributions by Sergeant E. Quill, Messrs T. Galloway, R.. Braithwaite, H. J. Ferguson, H. R. Wood and Worth. A burlesque broadcast of a wrestling match. W. A. King v. E. L. Watkins, presented by Messrs Dugmore and R. Dixon, created much amusement.

I was also addressed by Major Harold | W. Hartman, Principal Chaplain of the United States Forces in New Zealand Major Hartman paid a tribute to the pioneers carrying the Gospel to the unexplored parts of the. world and presented a challenge to ; the younger generation to shoulder a j great burden in the Christian i Church. j The Mayor, Mr H. D. Caro, exj tended a welcome to visitine soeakj era.

Also on the platform were Lieutenant - Colonel R. Tilsley, M.C., D.C.M., Flying-Officer McWhannell, R.N.Z.A.F., ministers and borough councillors. Mr Henry G. Cook, Mus.Bac., acted as pianist.
