ENEMY PLANES DESTROYED (United Press Assn.—tier. Tel. Copyrig-hu (Special Correspondent) (Received March 10, 1 p.m.) LONDON, March 9 The sole New Zealander in the Whirlwind Fighter Bomber Squadron is Flight-Sergeant Desmond Roberts, of New Plymouth, aged 22 years, who recently shot down a Dornier 217 over the Channel and later met the German pilot after he had been picked up from the sea. Flight-Seregant Roberts said: “The Germans baled out just as the Dornier broke up. I just dipped the port wing in time to miss one of them.” The Whirlwinds are used for strafing German shipping in the Channel, and also are continuously attacking communications in the north of France and Belgium. Flight-Lieutenant James S. Humphreys, of Wellington, is the only New Zealander in the West Riding of Yorkshire Squadron, flying Typhoons, which has been shooting down sneak-run daylight raiders with considerable success. FlightLieutenant Humphreys fought in France and the Battle of Britain.
