HEAVY LOSS BY FIRE

QUANTITY OF KAURI GUM KAITAIA, Wednesday A quantity of kauri gum valued at several thousand pounds, the property of Mr C. Jurlina, of North Awanui, has been destroyed by a fire which broke out afresh after it had been thought checked. When the fire began in the early afternoon the gum heaps were not endangered. Troqps assisted in fighting the flames and at evening returned to camp. However, a tongue of flame crept round a hill and burned down to the gum heaps, igniting the highly inflammable material. The troops again turned out and assisted to save Mr Jurlina’s house. A motor-cycle was destroyed.
