PUBLIC OPINION

CURRENT VIEWPOINTS j SOCIAL SECURITY LAW (To the Editor) Sir,—Mr Kenah would rather leave it to common decency to help the widows and orphans and old people than accept the good moral law that our Government made. Does Mr Kenah mean the decency of the drunkards of Ephraim, who would stoop their heads to give a penny to the little begging child in the street but would not hold their heads erect and step out like men to get better conditions for that child’s parents, or repent and use some of their illgotten gains to clean up the slums? Mr Kenah asks, Is it a spiritual law to give to others when you have saved a nest-egg for yourself? Yes You will find it in the Proverbs: Be diligent and have, so as to give those who have not. Mr Kenah says tha‘ instead of talking about rights ! should be grateful to those who out of kindness are quite willing to contribute, etc. I am very grateful to a good Government and to all those who willingly and gracefully pay the tax, knowing that they are doing duty and helping many others, being good citizens and making themselves worthy of their own rights when ! their turn comes. | But to all those who complain I about such a duty, and persecute the I Government, and to all those who are spluttering and gasping to have | our pensions cut down, I would ex tend my forgiveness but no thank and no pity.—l am, etc., T. E. MAGNER. Hamilton, Dec. 8.
