SCUFFLE COSTS TWO MEN £26 Two freezing works employees, Richard W. O’Connell, age 20, and Thomas C. McCombs, age 21, of Horotiu, were convicted by Mr S. L.Paterson, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Hamilton, today, on charges of disorderly behaviour while drunk j and of mischief in that they broke a I window valued at £26 in A. H. Gollop’s tobacconist shop, Victoria j Street, on Saturday night. Both accused admitted disorderly j behaviour but denied breaking the I window. They alleged that four sol- j diers had been nestering them to sell \ or share 12 bottles of beer they had I purchased and that when they reached Gollop’s a scuffle had occurred in which a soldier broke the window. All ran away. Police evidence was that the two civilians were found hiding in a bicycle shed where ! they had six bottles of beer. The magistrate convicted both men • on both charges, and on the charge j of mischief ordered them to come up | for sentence if called upon within 12 months. An order for the restitution of the cost of the damaged window was also made.
