WINTER CONDITIONS

RACING AT TE RAPA SPECTACULAR JUMPING BAD DAY FOR FAVOURITES The wintry weather prevailing on Saturdav did not prevent a large attendanc- \ at the Waikato Baring Club’s headquarters at Te Rapa for the winter meeting, and though winners were hard to find the investing public would not fie deterred, and at the rnd or ihe day £56.69 i had represented a drop of only £5 i figures of last year’s write- meeting. £57.1 99. Many hundreds or pounds were shut out through Investors delaying their business. some remarkably attractive dividends were recorded. eight reaching double figures. The best return or the dav was that nr the Te Bapa-trainpd Sun Boy Tor first in the Melville Steeplechase, with Air Port's second placing iti the first division of the Stewards’ Handicap running it closp. Each was close to the halfcentury. The final event of the day saw home True, a ha- k from Taranaki, return his supporters over a third or a century. The only favourites on the win machine to record a victory were Merry Yanis, in the ,-erond imi-ion or the stewards’ Handicap, and I van's Head in the Seddon liaek Hurdle-, hut hnzie Boy. yinner of the principal steeplechase event, was a good second favourite. A warm ravourifp, Kami I Te rai. in the Hamilton Hurdles, could only get third piarc, and Conflagration. favourite in the Te Rapa .-lepples, i came to grief when looking certain to win. Incidentally, confiagrat ion raced much more boldly than hp did at Hawera a week earlier. Young Paddon, winner or the First Division of the stewards’ Handicap. was (bracketed with Gayest Son in; the ,-erond Division; the actual ravourite i on the place machine, hut only third fancy on the win machine. Several fine- were imposed bv the stewards for breaches or the rules, such as late scratching and delay in sending a starter into the birdcage. It Is not often that double-figure divi- | dends are identical at one meeting, but i the place dividend or Sun Boy, winner of the Melville Steeplechase, was exactly the ! same as the win dividend or Lowrv Bar, winner or the Second Division or the Otorohanga Hark Handicap. Patrons must have enjoyed the Jump ing events, rnr there were very Tew spills, while (he principal event or the dav. the Te Ha pa Steeples, was remarkable in that, until about three rurlnngs from home not "lie horse had put n Toot wrong. Then , Gonfiagration. when well out in front, crashed. The last has hepn sepn on racecourses j "f River Plate, owned by the Hon. K H. Davis and Mr O.
