RUGBY VICTORIES

ARMY—TECHNICAL OLD BOYS FASTER REARGUARD PREVAILS The representative Rugby football team of the Air Force which is competing in the Hamilton senior competition was defeated on Saturday at Rugby Park by Technical Old Boys by 37 points to 6. On No. 2 ground another senior match resulted in a win for the Army representatives over Waipa. The score was 11 points to 8 In the curtain-raisers High School drew with Old Boys with 9 points each on No. 1 ground while on No. 2 Technical Old Boys defeated Marist by 6 points to 0. From the beginning Air Force opened up the attack and soon were forcing Technical into their own twenty-five. Air Force was awarded a penalty kick in a handy position. T. 3eard kicked the goal. Air Force appeared to have the heavier team, but lacked fast backs. Although Old Boys hooked many of the scrums Air Force forwards proved their worth in the loose, as was the case last week. H. Puke scored for Old Boys and his try was converted by Satherley. Old Bovs was now on the offensive and P. Kelly, on the left wing, scored after a passing rush by the back line, making the score B—3. Because of the inability of the Air Force forwards tc pack round in loose scrums Old Boys remained in Air Force territory. After a clever evasive run by Hart, Old Boys scored a try which Satherley converted. Following this Air Force determinedly pressed home the attack but as was the case last week faulty passing spoilt a number of good openings. From a kick to the centre by the Old Boys half-back, Griffiths. the wing three-quarter, ran down the line to score. His try was converted. At the half-time whistle the score was 18—3 in Old Boys favour. Faster Back Line Air Force opened well in the second half hut a pass was intercepted by the faster Old Eoys back line and after a brilliant run by Goosman, Kelly was passed the ball and he rushed over the line. The try was converted. Fine passing rushes by the Old Boys backs overcame ihe Air Force forward attacks and P. Kelly again scored a try, which was converted. A long kick-off by Air Force put them in Old Boys territory and K. Hardy, the Air Force captain, in spite of heavy opposition struggled over to score an unconverted try. At this juncture Technical forwards were doing the : better m ihe line-outs and Air Force ap- ! peared to tiie. However, a passing movement was atI tempted by Air Force, but as they drew ; into Old Boys territory a faulty pass en- ! abi** 1 the Old Boys backs to turn the dan- ! gcrous attack into a try tor their own side. I to 31 6. Air Force with renewed vigdur again attacked, but allhough several men made individual runs they were most I v tackied in possession. A pcnalty acainst the Air Force full-back for hold- : nit: on to the ball too lone enabled Satherl, Y to goal. Kelly scored for Old Boys just before the final whistle, and this brought I "'a vci'v even game was played between i A,mv and Waipa. At half-time the score 'was 8-3. and it remained thus until well into the second half. At the last moment 11 of the Armv team had to be replaced and thus only' four of the original team were available, a new team having to be organised. The final score was 11-8 in Army’s favour.
