RED CROSS WORK
VISIT BY COMMANDANT Miss Tennent, M.8.E., Command-ant-in-Chief of Red Cross Voluntary Aids in New Zealand, who has completed an inspection of the Waikato Centre’s area, when addressing the Hamilton voluntary aid detachments complimented the centre on the remarkable progress and development in the twelve months since her last visit. She remarked on the high standard of training set by the centre and said she considered that Waikato compared more than favourably with any other centre in New Zealand. She was particularly impressed with the stations established at Te Kauwhata, Cambridge, Huntly and Te Aroha. Miss Tennent stressed the probable increasing demands on the nursing service due to the increase of men under arms in New Zealand and the necessity for training as many V.A.’s as possible. The director of National Service, she continued, had stated that it would be in exceptional circumstances only that a V.A. would be called or diverted to a channel other than nursing. Miss Tennant read a memorandum from the Director advising that in future the Army Department would make all requests for transport and assistance respecting sick and wounded direct to the Red Cross organisation.
