MAIL FROM MIDDLE EAST

LAST ARRIVAL FEBRUARY 25 (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Saturday The non-receipt over recent weeks of letters from the New Zealand forces in the Middle East need not cause any special anxiety, stated the Postmaster-General, the Hon. P. C. Webb, last night. He added that as a result of the suspension of the Empire air service between Egypt and Australia letters now have to be forwarded to New Zealand by surface mails, involving a transit time of between 50 and 60 days, sometimes even longer, compared with a fortnight by air mail. The last air mail received in New Zealand from the Middle East, said Mr Webb, arrived on February 25 and last surface mail on February 21.

He added that an arrangement has been made for prepaid air mail from the Middle East to be flown across Australia after being landed at the first port of call.
