SUBSTITUTE FUEL

USE IN MOTOR VEHICLES J EXTENSION OF CONTROL LIGHTING KEROSENE BANNED (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Thursday Gas oil, or automotive Diesel oil, mineral turpentine, dry cleaners, white spirit and lighting kerosene will be brought under the Oil Fuel Regulations as from tomorrow. Announcing this, the Minister of Supply, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, said as the result of the restrictions on motor-spirit certain of the public were utilising one of the listed fuels as a substitute for petrol and thus largely defeating the regulations. All of these products had to be brought in tankers from overseas and were just as valuable and essential to the country as petrol. Owing to the large demands being made for these products for use in motor vehicles a number of industrial activities were being hampered. Any persons who used the commodities in their businesses would have no difficulty in obtaining licenses for adequate amounts to cover their activities. It would not be necessary for individual users of lighting kerosene to obtain licenses, as it was proposed to ration this commodity through the oil companies and retailers. The companies would distribute to retailers kerosene available within the limits of their licenses and the retailers, in turn, would issue the kerosene to legitimate consumes;. Mr Sullivan said it would be an offence to use lighting kerosene in a motor vehicle. rmmj l 1 ..358
