FALL OF SINGAPORE LONDON. March In the House of Lords, Lord Addisen moved a resolution that the King be asked to appoint a Royal Commission to inquire into the defences of Singapore. He read extracts from letters from a colonel commanding a Scottish Regiment in Malaya who is now reported missing, Relieved dead, alleging inaction and bungling by the military authorities. This will bring the town’s total to date to over £15,000 JAPANESE NAVAL SQUADRON HEADED FOR NEW GUINEA LONDON, March 25 The Vichy radio has quoted a Shanghai report to the effect, that a Japanese naval squadron has been sighted in the East China Sea proceeding in the direction of New Guinea. GERMAN’B PLIGHT RESCUE OF RUSSIANS LONDON. March 25 A Russian unit, advancing swiftly over the 30 miles across Lake Ilmen approached the outskirts of Staraya Russa. A ski detachment broke into the outskirts and liberated several hundreds oF Russians from a prison camp. The German supply position is desperate and they have lost hundreds of planes in attempting to feed the garrison. AIR FORCE BAND DISPLAY A ceremonial marching display by the Royal New Zealand Air Force Band under Warrant Officer J. H. Hardwick in front of the Chief Post Office this afternoon was watched by a large crowd, which gave welldeserved applause to a performance whose quality Was something rarely experienced in Nftw Zealand. A telegram from Mr T. N. Smallwood. chairman of the Dominion National Savings Committee, was read to the public. It stated: ‘‘Great going, Hamilton, half a million in hand. Can you help reach million mark?”
