MEMBERS’ NIGHT

NATION AL CLUB FUNCTION One of the most entertaining programmes yet enjoyed at the National Club, was presented to a large attendance of members on Saturday night, when a social evening, arranged by the women officers of the club, was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The lounge, the capacity of which was taxed to its utmost, was charmingly arranged with bowls of summer flowers. Prior to the commencement of the programme. Air W. T. Luxton, president, referred with regret to the death, while on active service, of Lieutenant-Colonel J. M. Allen, M.P., a valued member of the National Party, and members stood in silence as a mark of respect and in sympathy with his widow and family. Tribute was paid by Mr Luxton to the numerous activities of the women members of the cluo, of whom there are over 50U and he then handed over the duties of the chair to Airs P. R. Newland, vice-president, who carried them out in a very happy and efficient manner. The following artists contributed to the excellent programme:—Mr Colin Roskruge, songs, Miss Marie Prendergast, elocutionary items; Mr Williams, songs; Air and Mrs W. Harrison, pianoforte duets; Air Duncan, songs; Miss Nola Primmer, songs; Mr K. McLeod, songs; Miss Patty Blake, tap dances. The highlight of the evening was a humorous talk by Mr A. J. Sinclair, of Te Awamutu, on “A new method for public speaking,” and judging from its enthusiastic reception by the members, it is a method which should meet with success. Congratulations were tendered to all responsible for the success of the evening by Mr F. Findlay, and the members then adjourned to the social hall where a buffet supper was served, followed by dancing. The guests were received by Mrs W. T. Luxton, wearing black lace, and Mrs P. R. Newland, in black matt crepe inset with net. They were assisted by two members of the executive, Mrs F. Powell, in aqua blue cloque, and Airs Norman Pattie, wearing mirage blue crepe madyns.
