GUNBOAT SUNK
COURAGE OF COMMANDER (Unitea Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, Dec. 10 The courageous manner in which the 63-year-old commander of the British gunboat Petrel, which was sunk at Shanghai by the Japanese, fought to the end has now been given in detail. When Japanese tanks rumbled through the streets to the waterfront the Petrel opened fire with her twoinch guns. Japanese bombers also attacked the warship, which fired on them, too. A Japanese cruiser then came along, and subsequently a destroyer. They were all engaged by the Petrel. After fighting for 20 minutes the gunboat blew up and sank with her White Ensign still flying.
