ITEMS OF INTEREST
Menace to New York.—All families were evacuated from Mitchell Field, Long Island, today, and every plane was off the ground after an official warning from Washington that hostile planes were near New York.
South Africa Declares War.—A proclamation announcing a state of war between South Africa and Japan has been gazetted. Canadian War Loan.—The Canadian Finance Minister announced that a new war loan of 500.000.000 dollars will be opened in February.
Aircraft Over Panama.—The N.B.C. picked up the Panama radio reporting that Japanese aircraft were flying over the Panama coast today, but no bombs were dropped. On the Alert.—The United States War Department today ordered all army airfields on the alert.
Restrictions Lifted.—The Military Affairs Committee of the United States House of Representatives has approved of legislation repealing the restrictions on the use of selectees and national guardsmen outside the hemisphere. Germans Fly Japanese Planes.— General McArthur, American Com-mander-in-Chief in the Pacific zone, has declared that German pilots are flying some of the Japanese planes.
