CHAMPIONSHIP PFIRST ROUND j The Hamilton Ladies’ Golf Club ' was fortunate in having a perfect : spring day for the commencement of j their championships last Wednesday. \ The qualifying rounds for the three | divisions were decided in the mom- j ing, and the first round of match play I for the Senior and Junior Champion- j ship was played in the afternoon. In ! the seniors the top place was taken i by last year’s champion Mrs A. H. McDonald, who returned the excellent card of 80. Miss Wilkinson with a very good round of 83 was second, Mrs Mander 85 was third, and Mrs Seyb, Mrs S. Bennett, and Mrs Batt tied for fourth place with 86. In the juniors Mrs Chitty was in good form and led her division with a nice card . of 91. Mrs Thomas, who played well j on to her handicap with 92, was sec- , ond, and then followed Mrs Rawlin- | son 96, and Mrs Worley, Mrs Beattie j and Mrs Ensoll all with 97. The list ; of those who qualified for the Gillies’ j Vase was led by Mrs Fraser with Mrs | Wooller second and Mrs Beange third.

In the first round of match play ! two senior games provided exciting | endings, the rest being won by fairly j substantial margins. Miss Little- j proud and Mrs S. Bennett after a j very close contest squared their game I with long putts by both on the 18th green, and, continuing on to the 19th, Miss Littleproud clinched the match with a nicely played bogey. Mrs Waring and Mrs Batt were all square going to the 18th where Mrs Batt found herself with a complete stymie and tlie game went to Mrs Waring, 1 up. The other results were: Mrs O’Connor beat Mrs Sommerville, 2 up and 1, Mrs Seyb beat Mrs Joy 4 up and 3, Miss Wilkinson beat Mrs Gro- | cott, 5 up and 4, Mrs Mander beat i Mrs Milroy, 6 up and 5, Miss Bird ; beat Mrs Brewis 6 up and 5, Mrs McDonald beat Mrs Rawlings, 7 up and 6. The closest match in the juniors occurred between Miss Cann and Mrs Hardy. Both played well on form, Miss Cann gaining the lead coming in until she was dormy three. Mrs Hardy, however, fought gamely and Miss Cann was able to gain the decision only on the last green 1 up. Mrs Chitty beat Miss Turnwald by the narrow margin of 2 up, and the following were the other results; Mrs Beattie beat Mrs F. H. Taylor, 3 up < and 1; Mrs Ensoll beat Mrs Gamble, 3 up and 2; Mrs Rawlinson beat Mrs Oliphant, 3 up and 2; Mrs Hilton beat j Mrs Worley, 4 up and 3; Mrs Toombs beat Mrs Scarfe 4 and 3; Mrs Signal j beat Mrs Thomas, 3 up and 3. Finals Played

Next Wednesday the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the three divisions will be played. The matches will commence between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. and between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. An open day will be held by the rest of the club who may arrange friendly games avong themselves, but are asked to leave the first tee vacant between 9.30 a.m. and 11 a.m. and between 12.30 p.m. and 2 p.m. The finals will be played on Thursday, the Senior Championship over 36 holes, starting at 10 a.m. and 1.30 p.m. The junior finals will start at 1 p.m. and the Gillies’ Vase finals at 12.30 p.m. Last Tuesday the final of the Clachan Rose Bowl between Miss M. Bird and Mrs Signal was played in good weather. Miss Bird, who was playing in very good form, gained an early lead on her opponent and finished the winner by 6 up and 5. The finals of the competition for Mrs D. Macdiarmid’s trophy between Mrs V. Knight and Miss I. Fow were also played on the same day. This proved a very close and even contest Mrs Knight winning on the 17th green 2 up and 1.

A grand patriotic ball is to be held under the auspices of the Hamilton and Lochiel Golf Clubs. A committee from both clubs is working hard to perfect all arrangements for making this a really gala evening.
