DERNA BOMBED
NAZI SUPPLY BASE HEAVY DAMAGE RESULTS MIDDLE EAST ACTIVITY (Official Wireless) (Received May 12, 1 p.m.) RUGBY, May 11 The prolonged bombing of the aerodrome at Derna, an important enemy supply point, had successful results, according to a Royal Air Force Middle East communique, which states that the Derna aerodrome, upon which there was a considerable number of enemy aircraft dispersed, was bombed by the Royal Air Force during Friday night and yesterday. Electric storms, which were most pronounced, prevented some of our aircraft from reaching the target. v At Jedabaya some Junkers 52’s, large troop-carrying aircraft, were bombed and damaged. Our fighters maintained active patrols and one Messerschmitt 109 was destroyed on the Gazala aerodrome as it was attempting to take off. There was a large number of enemy aircraft on the aerodrome and these were machine-gunned by our fighters. Attacks In Irak In Irak our aircraft continue to attack rebel occupied aerodromes and other military objectives. The barracks, aerodrome buildings and tx*ansport park at Mosul received over 12 direct hits. The barracks at Amara, Diwaniya, Nasriya and Qaraghan were all attacked and damaged. In Abyssinia both fighters and bombers of the South African Air Force continued to support our troops in rounding up the remains of the Italian East African army. From all operations two of our aircraft are missing.
