BASKETBALL YEAR

MATAMATA ASSOCIATION (Special to Times) MATAMATA, Friday Submitted to the annual meeting of the Matamata Basketball Association, the report stated that • the 10 4 0 season was an exceptional year all round. A record number of teams (-20) had competed in association competition's, and decisions were close in every grade. The formation of a referees’ association resulted in a good number of promising referees who assisted greatly with the smooth running nnd control of games. The representative teams had a successful season, the A grade particularly so, among the victories being the North Island championship tournament at Ilotonia. which carried with it the Kurnugaituku trophy. The services or Mi**s K. V. Bell as coach and selector had again proved of immense value. Officers elected were as follows:—President, Miss E. V. Bell; secretary, Mrs N. Pond; assistant secretary and treasurer, Miss R. McCormack; draw’ steward. Miss P. Simpson; central committee, the above officers with Mrs Schwarz and Miss J. Clothier; postponement authority, Aliss P. Simpson; coach, Aliss Bell. It was decided to endeavour to obtain the services of Mr W. Campbell as selector. A social committee was formed comprising Misses M. Were, P. Marks. Mesdames Dobson. Schwarz nnd Sohaare. An invitation from the. Waikato Association to attend a field day on May 2 i was accepted. At the conclusion of the meeting a start was made with the opening tournament, which will be continued next Saturday.

CRICKET FUNCTION The Matamata cricket season was wound up with a smoke concert held in the Fire Brigade Hall. Mr R. G. Beaver presided and presented the following trophies: Bowler Shield: Wardville Crirket Club (eluh champions); Pohlen Cup <knock-out), Old Roys’ Cricket Club: Montague Cup (South Section). A. Hughes (vice-captain); Pohlen Bat. A. Roberts 'aggregate of runs, 300); Keeley Bat. A. Hughes I hatting average 28.3)': Pohlen Bat. W. Oldneld (bowling average 5).
