WEST COAST DISPUTE SYSTEM OF PAYMENT (By Telcgrapn.—rrr«s Association) WESTPORT, Tuesday A strike has occurred at the Hydro-Westport Coal Mine, Seddonville, affecting 18 men. It is understood that the subject in dispute is payment by contract or day labour, on which question the miners themselves appear to have divided opinions. McLagan, secretary of the Miners’ Federation, that a conference between Mr O. Bishop, representing the mine owners, Mr C. Strongman, of the Mines Department, and nimself had decided that if the men resumed work an official of the Mines Department would inspect the area objected to and make a report on the matter. meeting of the Millerton Miners’ Union will be held tomorrow to decide whether or not to resume work pending an inspection. Officials of the Westport Coal Company stated today that the first intimation the management had of the strike was when the men did not start work on Monday. It was also said that a conference was held some tune ago on the working conditions in the section under dispute and the company considered that a satisfactoiy arrangement had been agreed cn.
