Watkins, Herbert Arthur, Hamilton; Wright, Robert Gray, Cambridge. Suddenly there was a “plop” and O’Sullivan fell down. “Oh, you have shot him,” witness exclaimed to her nusband, wno was behind her. She then said, “I will nave to go for the police.” Accused Unable to Sleep Questioned by His Honour witness said she did not tiiink that her husband knew of O’Sullivan’s threats on Saturday. Alter several more remarks witness admitted tnat her husband knew of the threat to lire the cottage.

Mr W. J. King then cross-examin-ed witness concerning her husband’s health during tlie past year. She said he thought he had cancer and he would tremble violently for about a quarter of an hour if anything aroused him. As a result oi his injuries, received while working in the quarry, he received a Government invalidity pension. Mrs Longley detailed the demands made by O'Sullivan, from April, 1940, onwards, for the occupancy of the cottage. These demands were made at the rale of three or four a week, upsetting her husband so

that he could not sleep. “My husband kept taking sleeping taolets all the time,” stated witness. Every effort had been made to rent another house. Land agents were interviewed and they tried to offer their car as a deposit for the purchase of a house. When she interviewed the constable at Taumarunui Police Station on the Saturday he hold her not to worry as they could only be put out by law. Mrs Longley said that all the time of the tragedy she did not see the rifle as it was behind her while she was standing in the door. At no time had her husband made any threats against O'Sullivan or indicated that he would do him any harm. In reply to His Honour, witness said the rifle was only used by her husband to shoot a rabbit when he went out for a walk. Sometimes he would show the children how to use it in the yard.
