OBITUARY
MRS RICHARD ENGLISH The death occurred in Hamilton this morning of Mrs Charlotte Grant English, wife of Mr Richard Eng--1 llsh, of Hamilton, at the age of 55. Born in Wairuna in 1885, the daughter of the late Mr T. C. Harrison and Mrs Harrison, Mrs English had lived in Hamilton for the past 17 years. She was a mistress at the Hamilton High School for six years. Mrs English graduated at Otago University, and before coming to ; Hamilton in 1917 she taught at the Caversham School, Dunedin, and at Balclutha and Roxburgh. Besides her teaching duties she was in charge, with Miss Collins, of the first Girls’ Hostel conducted by the Hamilton High School, and carried out this arduous work for several years 1 before her marriage in 1923. Keenly l interested in the health of the pupils, ! she was in charge of all organised games for girls at the school, and ; supervised drill, basketball, hockey . and swimming.
After her marriage Mrs English continued to take an active interest in the progress of the school and expupils. She was a vice-president of the Hamilton High School Old Girls’ Association for many years, besides being president of the Old Girls’ Hockey Club and the Old Girls’ Swimming Club. In conjunction with Mrs H. C. Ross, Mrs English organised the first Learn to Swim Week in Hamilton and carried on this splendid work for four years before the swimming clubs took it over. Mrs English was also a keen golfer before she gave up the game on account of ill-health. She was a past-president of the Hamilton Ladies’ Golf Club.
