SOME NEW NOTIONS
HOW TO MAKE GAY WHEN THE SUN SHINES
Let’s look into the fashion horoscope and see what it foretells for summer! What a glowing kaleidoscope of colour there is, what novelty and, yes, what gaiety! There is animation and a spontaneous use of line and tene that is new and arresting. What is this subtle novelty? The first quality is apparent in
styles that are as trigger trim as dungarees and in just as serviceable material as the originals of these utilitarian garments but so much more attractive. The practical quality of clothes is important in wartime economy and spring and summer afford splendid opportunities for ingenuity in that direction. A blouse, for instance, to be really practical, can be linked up with equally good effect to a sun suit or an evening dress, but practicability does not mean dullness and it is here that the quality of gaiety comes in. This year plain tailor-made suits are made gay with crisp white pique revers. Satin or cotton bathing suits are to be enlivened with “jewel” accessories, that is, literally be-jewelled with sparkling brooches and ornaments in pseudo precious gems. Heady Frivolity Gaiety can go to the head, too, and it does in some new hats that feature giddy confections of ribbons, feathers, fruit, and flowers. Beach hats are bright, too, and are most often made in huge South Sea Islands shapes or like enlarged Victorian poke bonnets. For restrained gaiety in evening attire, there is the new “sidesaddle” drapery that lends interest to some slender dance dress silhouettes. Turbans for evening wear are gayer than ever because it is new to wear them in conjunction with bright tropical flowers. The flowers, made in a garland are attached to one side of the turban, above the ear, and they descend to the shoulder. Accessory News An odd jacket is a gay accessory to any wardrobe especially if it is a santung one with vivid red frogs seared across the front. Housecoats are gayer than ever because they are made in “cottage” chintzes and are most novel when made in the identical fabric to match the loose covers of your furnishings. Gaiety in trimmings is yet another facet of the brilliant new fashions. Saddle stitching in contrasting thread to the colour of the garment is considered very new for shirt dresses and for dark linen coats. Plaid insets are gay or plain clothes and narrow velvet ribbons are to be seen threaded through insertions of lace on the prettiest evening dresses.
