SOCIAL SECURITY LEVY MARRIED WOMAN’S ARGUMENT (By Telegraph.—Press Association) DUNEDIN, Saturday The first case of its kind in New Zealand came before the Police Court when a married woman, Mary Josephine Porter, was fined £2 for refusal to pay the yearly social security levy of ss. Defendant refused on principle, stating she had no money in her own right and would not ask her husband to pay. The Court pointed out that nearly al! married women were in the same position. The husband, who was present, declined to interfere with her decision, and the wife was beginning a new argument as to whether it would be ethical to accept payment by the husband when the Magistrate, Mr H. W. Bundle, interrupted to impose the fine, adding that it the fee were paid he might reconsider the penalty.
