WOMEN’S GOLF TOURNEY MRS P. R. GLANVILLE WINS HIGH STANDARD OF PLAY Brilliant tee work enabled the holder of the South Auckland women’s golf championship, Mrs P. R. Glanville, of Te Awamutu, to retain her title for the third successive year when she defeated Mrs H. McDonald, of Hamilton, in the final of the 1940 tournament at St. Andrews links yesterday afternoon. High standard golf was played in the final when Mrs Glanville won 3 and 2. Both competitors played excellently. There was a difficult wind blowing hard across the course and this appeared to give more trouble to Mrs McDonald than to Mrs Glanville. The title-holder’s driving attained tremendous length at times. In all departments of the game she was more steady than Mrs McDonald, although the latter did some excellent work on the green. There was little between ‘the players in the short work which at times reached very tygh standards. There were lapses, however, as are encountered in nearly all golf finals. At the ninth both players missed very easy putts which would have given them bogey fours. Cards of the Players Several of Mrs McDonald’s putts were excellent although she was encountering a little misfortune. At the tenth she just missed a very long putt of about 20 feet, while at the 14th she sunk a difficult putt, while Mrs Glanville dropped a hole by failing with a fairly easy putt. Mrs Glanville won the match at the sixteenth, where her long putt just missed, for birdie figures. The cards of the Ellis Cup final compared with bogey figures read:— Bogey: 3,5, 4,5, 4,4, 5,4, 4—38; 3,4, 4,5, 3,4, 4—27. Total for 16 holes, 65. Mrs Glanville: 3,5, 4,4, 5,4, 6,4, 6—41; 3,5, 4,4, 4,4, 4—28. Total for 16 holes, 69. Mrs McDonald: 4,5, 4,5, 5,3, 6,5, 6—43; 4,4, 4,5, 3,4, 5—29. Total for 16 holes, 72. Excellent Form Bogey for St. Andrews is 74 and Mrs Glanville is a six handicap player which would give her a standard score for the round of 80. As an indication of the excellent golf she has been playing in the tournament it is significant that on several occasions she did better than 80 and yesterday she was 69 with only two holes to go. Had she played those in bogey figures her total would have been only 78. The standard of play in the final yesterday was the best for several years. Exceptionally close competition prevailed in the finals of the Fraser Cup and the Flight Match. Results of the finals were as follows: Ellis Cup Mrs P. R. Glanville (Te Awamutu) beat Mrs H. McDonald (Hamilton). 3 and 2 Fraser Cup Mrs B. Lloyd beat Mrs V. D. Edwards, 1 up. Flight Match Mrs L. Chitty beat Mrs F. H. Taylor at the 19th. In a foursomes competition held in connection with the final day of the tournament, Mrs Berry and Miss Turnwald, 99—23—76, won from Miss Wright and Mrs Yendell, 103— 25 —78. Other cards were: Mrs Worley and Mrs Hooker, I(U—23 — 78; Mrs Hilton and Mrs Christie, 105—25—80; Mrs Gower and Mrs Kemp, 95—16—79; Mrs Bindon and Miss Madeley, 94—14 —80; Mrs Hastie and Mrs Wilkinson, 92—11 81; Mrs Endean and Mrs Green, 96 —15—81; Mrs Costello and Miss Hewitt, 95—14—81; Mrs Monteith and Mrs Anchor, 103—21 —82.
