FREIGHTER TORPEDOED BRAVERY OF SCHOOLGIRL RECOMMENDED FOR MEDAL j (Official Wireless) RUGBY, August 20 Seven members of the crew were killed by an explosion when an exGerman freighter, of 5000 tons, seized at the outbreak of the war, was torpedoed without warning in the Atlantic. Thirty-one of the crew are missing. Twenty-one survivors Sanded in Ireland after many hours in an open boat. They included a twelve-year-old , Liverpool schoolgirl, Meryl Reed, who was going to America. She gave up her coat to a young brother, j and placed another around orphan ; children. Th'e crew are recommending her j for the Girl Guide Medal.
