TORPEDOED BY U BOAT MOST OF CREW SAVED (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, Aug. 14 It is officially announced that the armed merchant cruiser Transylvania, of 16,923 tons (formerly a passenger liner of the Anchor Line), was torpedoed by a U-boat in the Atlantic and subsequently sank. The majority of the officers and crew were saved. The Transylvania was torpedoed at night in a rough sea. Rescuing ships, including trawlers, raced to the scene and saved 300 of the officers and crew, who were landed at a west coast port. The death roll is thought to be between 30 and 40. Immediately it was realised the ship was doomed the captain ordered the lowering of the lifeboats. One of them overturned, this probably accounting for most of the casualties. The captain was among those saved. The Transylvania was the sixth British armed merchant cruiser lost during the war.
