Copyright) (Received Aug. 14, 11 a.m.) NEWPORT (Rhode Island), Aug. 13 Following a visit by Mr Roosevelt and Colonel Knox it is reported that the Navy is considering transforming Newport, which is situated strategically at the entrance to Long Island Sound into a “ Gibraltar for the defence of New York.” It is understood that the plans provide for the construction of two forts protecting the harbour, where part of the Atlantic Fleet can be based.
