WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

WALTON The monthly meeting of the Walton Women’s Institute was held in the hall, Mrs Scott presiding over a fair attendance. Several important paragraphs were read from Home and Country, which proved very interesting and helpful. It was proposed that the Institute join the Lady Galway Guild in the district and give it wholehearted support. Mrs Rix gave a very interesting demonstration on how to make and apply poultices. She was accorded a hearty vote of thanks and was presented with a posy of violets by Mrs Paterson. The winners of the competitions were as follows:—Pikelets, Mrs C. McNaul 1, Mrs Paterson 2, Mrs Scott 3; best flower, Mesdames Franklin, Paton, Fagan, Bruce (equal) 1, Mrs Scott 2. Mrs Paterson 3. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames R. Scott, Franklin, H. Southee, and Fagan. WAITERIMU-MATAHURU Mrs C. Storey presided over a small attendance at the monthly meeting of the Waiterimu-Matahuru Institute. A new member was welcomed. Arrangements were made by the president to take a number of members to the school for officers to be held in Huntly on Thursday, August 15. Competition for an eggless cake was won by Mrs C. Storey, with Mrs J. Storey second. The best bloom competition was won by Mrs McGovern, Mrs Ludwig being second. The hostesses’ competition, knitting a short length of wool on toothpicks, caused much amusement and was won by Mrs W. Lawry. Hostesses were Mesdames Murray and McGovern. WAHAROA The Waharoa Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting last Thursday, a fair attendance being presided over by Mrs Burns. The motto for this month was, “Do not brag, its not the whistle that pulls the train.” “Questions and answers,” proved a popular roll call, and many laughs were the result. Miss Craig sang a solo which was much appreciated. Mrs Barry and Mrs Worth, of Matamata, gave a most instructive and interesting demonstration on ‘‘Sick nursing in the home.” This was a general favourite and gained hearty applause from all. A parcel of knitting for the soldiers was received from Miss Given and thanks were accorded her. It was noted that fifty members had joined the local St. John Ambulance classes now held in Waharoa, owing to Institute efforts, this result being most gratifying. The decision to send Is per member to patriotic funds from this Institute was approved. Two new members, Mrs J. Dowling and Mrs Slater, were welcomed. It was decided to hold the Institute “Husbands’ Evening” concert on August 15. The competitions for the day resulted as follows:—Best flower, Mrs Marshall 1, Mrs Petch 2, Mrs McDonald 3; knitted mittens for soldiers, Mrs F. Smith 1, Mrs Marshall 2; four cream puff shells, Mrs Guy 1, Mrs Smith 2, Mrs P. White 3; vase of spring flowers, Mrs Petch 1, Mrs F. Smith 2, Mrs J. S. Smith 3. Hostesses for the day were Mesdames Helmsley, Grey, Guy, and Malone.

TE PAHU The August meeting of the Te Pahu Women’s Institute was held in the hall recently, Mrs Watt presiding. There was a good attendance and to mark the centennial year members planted trees in the hall grounds. The president, Mrs Newland, and the secretary were appointed to attend a preliminary meeting, where the programme for the next group meeting will be arranged. Competitions for the day resulted as follows: —Best bloom, Mrs Clark 1, Mrs M. Arthur 2j lady’s spray, Miss M. Hills 1, Mrs Lomas 2. Hostesses were Mrs M. Arthur, Mrs C. Arthur and Mrs Newland. riRONGIA The Pirongia Women’s Institute celebrated the ninth birthday of the formation of the Institute last Thursday. Members of the Pirongia Domain Board and old residents were Chappell, Snr. Another tree was planted at the entrance to Matakitaki Park. The president, Mrs G. Harte Barry, addressed the gathering, and the tree was planted by Mrs ChapeU, senr. Another tree was planted in the grounds, adjacent to the Memorial Hall. A musical programme in the hall followed these ceremonies and then afternoon tea. Mrs C. Berry generously made and gave a delicious birthday cake. A bring and buy stall in aid of the Red Cross did good work under the capable hands of Mrs E. J. Owen. A competition for “something new’ from something old” was won by Mrs L. Godfrey, Mrs Rowan being second. Those contributing to the musical programme were Mrs W. G. Berry (vocal solos), Mrs Harte Barry violin solos) and Mrs Mead (accompanist).
