SENSATION IN CANADA

REFUSED TO REGISTER SYMPATHY WITH ITALIANS (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyrig-ht) MONTREAL, Aug. 5 The Royal Canadian Mounted Police, after questioning the Mayor of Montreal, Mr Camillien Houde, for 40 minutes, announced that he would be interned indefinitely under Section 1 of the Defence of Canada Regulations. They refused to say where he would be taken. The action followed Mr Houde’s refusal to comply with the registration provision of the Mobilisation Act.

Mr Houde was elected Mayor of Montreal in January, 1939, for his fourth two-year term. A month later he aroused intense public indignation by a statement in an address to the Y.M.C.A. in which he said the French-Canadians “by blood, if not by name, are Fascists and would side with Italy in the event of war between Britain and Italy.” In May of last year he? received the King and Queen on their visit to Montreal during the Canadian tour.
