DOG IN COURT

“QUIETEST IN WELLINGTON” (By Telegraph.—special to Times) WELLINGTON, Tuesday The statement that the animal concerned was the quietest dog in Wellington was made by Mr O. C. Mazengarb, counsel for a woman who was charged in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., with failing to keep a dangerous dog under proper control. “Do you know all the dogs in Wellington?” the Magistrate asked counsel, amidst laughter. Counsel had to admit that he did not. His Worship: Well, why suggest that it is the quietest clog in Wellington ? As proof of his contention, Mr Mazengarb drew attention to the fact that the clog was then in court. “I don’t know that it is entitled to be in court,” said the Magistrate. I don’t know that any writ or summons was issued for the clog to appear.” (Laughter). Apparently satisfied that the dog was not particularly ferocious, the Magistrate said that he would not order its destruction. A small fine was imposed upon the owner, on whose behalf an undertaking was given by counsel that it would be kept under control.
