PRICES FOR SHEEP

BEST FOR THREE YEARS VALUES AT FRANKTON ALL CLASSES IN DEMAND The best market for over three years was experienced for fat sheep at the Frankton sale to-day. Buyers gave money that was equivalent to a rise of 5s a head on last week for top quality wethers, while other classes similarly improved. A larger bench of buyers, combined with the fact that the entry was the smallest this year, served to stimulate competition, which was animated from the outset. Over the early sales several pens made above 40s, readily selling to 42s against the top price of 37s last week. Sheep of any quality invariably made above 38s. Ewes were also keenly sought, and prices in the first row of sheep to be sold were up to 30s 6d, a rise of 2s on last week. The supply of beef was bigger than last week but there was little change in the market. Ox beef, however, tended a shade easier, though 'there was no apparent alteration for cow and heifer beef. Heavy prime bullocks to-day were traded from £l3 to £l4 15s, against £l4 2s to £ls last week. Values a 1001 b for extra prime ox remained substantially the same at 35s to 38s. Cows and heifers, which were in the largest supply for some weeks, again commanded keen attention, although top individual quotations were on a lower scale. Values a 1001 b, however, remained the same. Heavy prime sorts were traded from £lO 7s to £ll 12s, against £l2 17s 6d to £l3 12s last week. Last week’s top price cattle, however, were considerably heavier sorts. Calves and boner cattle again met with a keener sale to-day. Pigs in Request The entry of fat pigs was a light one and was smaller than last week. All sorts were particularly dear, fatteners being very keen to absorb light porkers. No heavy baconers were penned but medium sorts were readily cleared. Bidding in the store pig section was the keenest for week*! and a further rise on recent advanced values was recorded. In some cases ; store prices were equivalent to those being received for some classes of fat pigs a few weeks ago. Quotations: Extra heavy prime bullocks, £l3 to £l4 15s; medium, £ll 9s to £l2 18s; lighter prime, £lO 14s to £ll 2s 6d; small, £9 5s to £lO 7s; extra heavy prime cows and heifers, £lO 7s to £ll 12s; medium prime, £8 7s 6d to £9 19s; fat, £6 5s to £7 19s; small and killable, £5 to £6 2s 6d. Pigs: Medium baconers, 71s to 395; porkers, 56s to 70s.
