BRISKER DEMAND

VALLES IMPROVE INQUIRY FOR BEEF KEEN SHEEP MARKET A brighter tone was evident in both the mutton and beef markets at the Frankton sale yes* tcrJay, although the actual advance in values was only slight. Improved quality entries in both sections was a big factor in the brisker sale experienced. The entry of fat pigs was the smallest this year with the result that keen values were realised. Some heavy choice cattle were included in the ox beef section with the result that competition was stimulated and actual prices were the highest l'or some weeks. Heavyweight descriptions were traded from £l3 12s 6d to £l4 10s, the latter figure being the highest this winter. Good medium-weight sorts were traded from £ll 10s to £l2 11s and lighter cattle from £lO 12s 6d to £ll 3s. Light inferior pens were sold from £7 5s to £8 15s. In the cow and heifer beef, which was better supplied, entries on the whole represented the best quality for some weeks. The top price was £ll, which was paid for four quality Polled Angus heifers. Other heavy prime sorts were knocked down from £9 3s to £lO 10s, with other prime pens from £7 12s 6d to £8 14s. As with the ox beef, the price a head was usually well in advance, but the actual rise in values was not substantial. Boners again sold well, while the demand for calves was stronger. Brisk Sheep Inquiry The quality of some of the pens in the fat sheep section was the best seen at the yards for quite a considerable number of weeks. Several lines of heavy choice wethers were auctioned from 33s 6d to 375, the latter figure being 1/- better than the top money of last week and equal to the best money received at the yards this year. Fat wethers were quoted from 30s to 325, against 29s 6d to 31s last week, and unfinished sorts from 25s to 295, in comparison with 23s 3d to 27s 6d. Competition did not drag at any time and values tended just a shade firmer. The market was likewise a little better for ewes, the best of which changed hands from 22s to 25s 6d, practically the same money as last week. Fat sorts were quoted at 18s to 20s 6d, against 18s to 19s 6d and unfinished from 12s to 17s, against 12s to 16s. Fat lambs sold very firmly. So few fat pigs were on offer—there was not even one complete row—that values were hardly quotable. Values, needless to say, were very keen. An animated demand was again shown in the store pig section and another advance was recorded, large stores being quoted from 37s 6d to 48s, against 36s 6d to 43s last week. Price Summary The following table is a summary of prices realised for fat stock at the Frankton yards at the last two sales: BEEF (pep 1001 b.) This Week. Last Week.
