HOCKEY CHAMPIONS OLD BOYS’ FAILURE AOTEA MAINTAINS LEAD By its defeat of Old Boys at Steele Park on Saturday by 4 goals to two, Aotea has virtually won the senior hockey championship in Hamilton this season. It now leads in the championship table with 18 points, the sco'nd team, Old Boys, being substantially behind with 8 points. Old Boys made a strong bid on Saturday to defeat the unbeaten Technical team, but Aotea showed itself as strong in defence as attack. In the other senior fixture Colts took the measure of Kaipaki by two goals to

TWO TO ONE • COLTS BEATS KAIPAKI Many chances went begging in the Colts—Kaipaki encounter, mishitting and hesitancy in the circle being all too frequent. Kaipaki had plenty of chances in the first half and although it had the territorial advantage could put this to no account. Colts’ two goals and Kaipaki’s goal were all scored in the second half, when there was some improvement in circle play. It was Colts first win this season, its previous championship points coming from two drawn games. The teams were:— Kaipaki: Goodwin, F. Boyd, W. Sexton, T. McCarthy, A. Boyd, Dunwoody, M. Boyd, G. Boyd. Graham, N. Sexton, T. Ganley. Colts: McKinnon, Tozer, Mackley, Jane, Harvey, Melling, Campbell, Vercoe, Perrett, Curteis, W. Tozer Kaipaki was having the better of the game in the early stages and pressed relentlessly. Several times the forwards brought the ball into the circle, but inaccurate hitting told against them. From a corner, A. Boyd sent a hard shot to the net, but McKinnon and Tozer combined to send the ball away safely. On another occasion the country team had practically an open goal in front, a mishit within scoring distance costing the attackers a very promising chance. Perrett Breaks Clear There was an interlude in Kaipaki’s attack when Perrett broke right through the attacking lines, took the ball the length of the field and shot hard for goal. However, Goodwin was fully alive to the danger, blocking and sending the ball away smartly. The Colts team was in a difficult position when Kaipaki pressed vigorously again, but Jane sent away a long clearing shot. Curteis followed it up and took the ball on to the circle. F. Boyd tackled him well, however, and then an infringement stayed Colts’ progress. The first goal of the match came when in a loose forward rush across Colts’ goal mouth. W. Sexton seized his opportunity and shot the ball into the net. The Colts team was not long behind, however, an attack that originated from Kaipaki s circle terminating successfully. Melling

robbed Ganley of the ball, which went downfield to Curteis, who carried on play into the circle. The forward ca]©ped off his run with an excellent goal to make the teams even. Kaipaki 1, Colts 1. Graham and Ganley led an attack into Colts’ Territory, but the defence successfully withstood the onslaught. Colts in its turn launched an offensive, Vercoe and Curteis being prominent in the raid on the circle. Kaipaki failed to withstand the barrage, Curteis scooping the ball into net for his second goal, to make the score 2—l in Colts’ favour. The final whistle sounded almost immediately afterwards. The umpires were Messrs Fabling and Weldon.
