DEVELOPMENT PROJECT
LOWER HUTT EXTENSION (By TelPßTUDft.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Thursday The Lower Hutt Borough Council is seeking legislative authority for a great expansion of the area extending to Taita Gorge on the north and a large area under the hills to east and west, altogether increasing the area three-fold. Special rating areas are to be provided for market gardening and similar lands within the boundaries. The proposals were outlined by the Mayor, Mr Andrews, to-day. The tremendous growth of the Hutt Valley, both industrial and residential, the latter greatly enhanced by Government housing, has caused the borough services to be extended to the areas outside, and there is an immediate prospect of more large areas needing to be served. Ten-year Development However, a much wider area will come under intensive development in the next ten years, and it is considered prudent to include the whole of the area mentioned in the petition which would cover housing, ’make provision for control of watersheds, and ensure the necessary space for a town belt. The chief considerations include the statement that the area forms a single drainage area, that it is desirable to ensure that subdivision of the land conforms to the town planning scheme, and that adequate provision be made of reserves, recreational facilities and other amenities.
