MARKET FOR SOWS
SALE AT CLAUDELANDS KEEN VALUES REALISED Keen values were realised at a sale ' of 250 pedigree and grade pigs in the Claudelands pig pavilion yesterday. Particular interest was shown in sows and the prices paid were some indication of the increased importance of the pig industry under wartime conditions. Pedigree Berkshire sows were sold from 13£ to 19 gns, and backward sorts from 7 to 9 gns. Eighteen guineas was the top price for Large Black sows and 14 gns for Tamworths. Grade sows changed hands readily, usually from £7 to £lO 10s with sows and litters making to £l2. j The sale was conducted by the i Farmers’ Auctioneering Company with Mr F. M. Harkness in the rostrum. Pedigree Berkshire sows from Mr A. T. Rogers, of Ngaruawahia, commanded keen interest. The top money of 19 gns was given by Mr A. Wiggin, of Rotouna, and 18 gns was paid by Mr P. Rickard. Mr J. W. Cornwall, of Tatuanui, was a buyer at 17 gns. Other Berkshire sows from Mr Rogers sold from 13£ to 16 gns. From 7 to 12 gns was given for young Berkshire boars from j the Ngaruawahia breeder. Two Large Black sows from the same vendor made 16 to 18 gns respectively, the latter prices being given by an agent. | Large Black in pig to a Tamwortli Money For Grades i boar sold on account of Mr W. Wardrop, of Tauranga, from £7 10s to £9 5s and Tamworth sows in pig to Large Black boars sold on account of the same vendor to £9 10s. One with a litter of 10 sold at £l2. A consignment from Mr A. Johns, of Eureka, consisting of sows with litters, made from £8 15s to £lO ss, while from £8 5s to £lO 10s was given for four good Tamworth sows from Mr P. Chitty, of Tauwhare. Sows from Mr B. J. McKee, of Morrinsville, sold from £7 to £7 ss.
